Mechanisms : Student - optimality vs

چکیده
1. Abstract The college admissions problem is an example of a two-sided matching market. Even though it is closely-related to the stable marriage problem, it is in fact not equivalent. However, the problems are similar enough that the mechanisms used to solve them share some properties—the mechanisms are only guaranteed to produce an optimal stable outcome for one of the parties, but not both. In this paper, we will try to answer which of the two mechanisms is more preferable in the college admissions problem, at least in practice. While a men-optimal stable mechanism and a women-optimal stable mechanism in the marriage problem are symmetric of each other, a student-optimal stable mechanism and a college-optimal stable mechanism in the college admissions problem are not. Due to this asymmetry, it has been shown that a college-optimal stable mechanism has more undesirable properties than its counterpart. Moreover, the results from experiments that ran a student-optimal stable mechanism and a college-optimal stable mechanism over real data from the National Resident Matching Program that matches hospitals and medical interns (including medical specialties) in the US revealed that participating programs (colleges) would not have been much worse-off under a student-optimal stable matching (approximately 2% of the programs would have been worse off).

Optimization-seeking experimentations: Design of an RL-circuit via the vs-optimality criterion
In this paper we explore the Vs-optimality criterion that was proposed in Ginsburg and Ben-Gal (IIE Trans. 2006; 38:445– 461) as a new design-of-experiment (DOE) alphabetic optimality criterion. The Vs-optimality criterion seeks to minimize the variance of the optimal solution of an empirically fitted model. We show that the Vs-optimality citerion is well related to known alphabetic DOE criteri...
متن کاملStudent Placement to Public Schools in US: Two New Solutions
An increasingly popular practice in placing students to public schools in the US is the use of school choice programs. In a school choice program, each student submits a preference list of schools to a central authority which then decides upon how to place students to schools while also taking the priorities of students for schools into consideration. The crucial issue here is determining a cen...
متن کاملBreast feeding Optimality and Neonate\'s Growth after Mother Aerobic Exercise; A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
Aims: Evidence has suggested that there might be negative consequences and benefits associated with maternal exercise while breastfeeding. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of the exercise on lactation in breastfeeding women regarding whether mothers can exercise and breastfeed without detriment to the growth of their infants. Materials & Methods: In this randomized contr...
متن کاملOptimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*
This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...
متن کاملDesigning experiments for robust-optimization problems: the Vs-optimality criterion
We suggest an experimentation strategy for the robust design of empirically fitted models. The suggested approach is used to design experiments that minimize the variance of the optimal robust solution. The new design-of-experiment optimality criterion, termed Vs-optimal, prioritizes the estimation of a model’s coefficients, such that the variance of the optimal solution is minimized by the per...
